Bill Gates stated in an interview that social media platforms must focus on reducing riots and misinformation.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has offered his views on Elon Musk’s management style on Twitter and said that a “seat-of-the-pants” approach is “worsening digital polarisation.” He also stated that Twitter is “stirring things up,” albeit not in the best way, most likely because Musk makes decisions on his own or based on Twitter polls. A “seat-of-the-pants” decision-making style refers to making decisions based on judgment and feelings rather than planning.

In an interview with the Financial Express, Gates stated that social media platforms should focus on reducing riots and addressing posts that contain misinformation, such as the safety of vaccines or masks.

When asked about the difficulties that Twitter is likely to face, he stated, “I wish I had a grand answer for this one because it appears to be more ambiguous now than even a year ago… The Twitter situation, I believe, is certainly agitating things. Instead of an objective set of measures carried out by a large group of people, you’re seeing more seat-of-the-pants activity.”

Notably, before the formal acquisition, Gates expressed similar reservations about Musk.

At a May summit, the Microsoft co-founder stated that Musk could exacerbate Twitter’s misinformation problem. He was primarily referring to Twitter’s newspeak your mind approach, which he believes could lead to misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine. Gates also mentioned it in his most recent interview.
